Wollongong Performing Arts Centre

When the Wollongong Performing Arts Centre faced the prospect of damaging flooding as their antiquated generator failed to automatically start during a recent storm they realised they needed to upgrade it urgently . The original Lister air cooled generator was installed in the 1970’s and although they had been led to believe it was an autostart and transfer set it became apparent the hard way it was not .

After winning a competitive tender EIP Diesel recommended a Kubota semi enclosed J310 11 kVA three / single phase generator , a Socomec CTI63 Automatic Transfer switch and a 200 litre fully bunded fuel tank . The Kubota J310 was perfect as it is so compact and it had to be manoeuvred around existing structures that were not removable , also as there is no need for personnel to be in the same room it did not need to be  silenced set . The tender also called for total intrinsic safety and to this end the 200 litre fuel tank capable of allowing the set to operate at full load for 62 hours was of a double bunded design and to also contain any possible leakage from the generator itself the two components were placed in a bunded area with the mounting of the generator being on a  plinth the same height as the outer bund and the whole area sealed.

The Socomec CTI63 Automatic Transfer switch was mounted in the basement by the distribution board already in-situ for the sub pumps in the basement . The CTI63 not only starts the generator automatically upon loss of mains supply but even from loss of only one phase thus protecting the pump motors from serious damage as a result of running on only two phases .

A Deep Sea control panel was used to allow manual override to enable exercising the generator without the need to pull fuses to simulate outages or phase failures making it intrinsically safe for non electrically trained staff . The electrical installation was done by Chris from Pure Power ( EIP’s long term trusted partner in electrical installations ) who has over 20 years experience in both prime and standby power generation .

Kenny Fackler from EIP Diesel stated the client was very happy with the entire job and was pleasantly surprised to learn all the major component parts were high quality goods made in Japan ( Kubota Generator ) , Australia ( Masterflow Bunded Fuel Tank ) and France ( Socomec Automatic Transfer Switch ) and was amazed given that , that EIP could do the job for the price . So if you have a need for any form of power generation give Kenny a ring and discuss your unique requirements .
